Bruner belts 2 homers as Mustangs sweep

WICHITA, Kan. - Payton Bruner belted a pair of home runs Friday to  help the Mount Mercy softball team capture two games at the Friends  Tournament in Kansas.

Bruner connected for a solo homer in the first game and scored twice  as the Mustangs topped Bethel, 12-4, in six innings with a 14-hit  attack.

Bruner also socked a home run in the second game and drove in three  runs as the Mustangs bopped Tabor, 11-3, with another 14-hit attack.

The sweep lifted Mount Mercy to 7-3 for the campaign.

Hannah Mausser and Jaicee Lyons both went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the  12-4 triumph over Bethel. Jess Heick and Emily Oler had two hits. Oler  drove in four runs and Heick had two RBIs. Heick, Mausser and Morgan  Braughton scored twice. Madelyn Irwin pitched a complete game for the  victory.

No. 10 Eagles split in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The 10th-ranked Kirkwood softball team split a  doubleheader with Kansas City Community College Friday.

Isabelle True pitched a strong game as the Eagles topped Kansas City,  10-2, in the opener. She allowed only two earned runs on five hits.

Sydney Albaugh went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs in the  victory. Courtney Harris was 3-for-3, scored twice and had three  stolen bases. Shelby Hulsebus was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot and  scored two runs. Autum Barthelman was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Angie  Gorkow had two RBIs.

Gorkow and Albaugh had RBIs for Kirkwood in a 6-3 loss in the nightcap.

Streaking Mustangs win 10th in row

LAMONI - The Mount Mercy men's volleyball team won its 10th straight  match Friday by sweeping Graceland, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21, in a Heart of  America Conference match in Lamoni.

Ben Ruggles rolled up 43 assists for the Mustangs. Julian Armendano  and Ben Steffen had 11 kills. Nikola Stoimenov and Evan Gaskill  contributed nine kills and Strahil Svilenski had seven in a balanced  attack.

Tiago Almeida made 10 digs and Stoimenov had nine.

Gadient takes 6th in pentathlon

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Rachel Gadient of Mount Mercy placed sixth in the  pentathlon at the NAIA indoor national track meet Friday.

Gadient scored 3,241 points in the event.

She finished second in the  high jump competition in the pentathlon at 5 feet 4 1/2 inches and was  fourth in the shot put at 33-6 1/4.
