Eagles drop pair at Johnson County

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kirkwood baseball team dropped a pair of  tight games to Johnson County Saturday, 4-1 and 6-5, in the Kansas  City suburbs.

The losses dropped the Eagles to 0-3 for the season. Johnson County,  which is ranked No. 14 in NJCAA Division I, raised its record to 14-1.

Josh Fitzgerald hit a solo home run for Kirkwood in the 4-1 loss in  the opener. Kyle Moeder was 2-for-3.

Kirkwood grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning in the  nightcap, but Johnson County responded with three runs in the bottom  of the third and three more runs in the fifth inning for the 6-5  victory.

Mount Mercy men finish 14-16

A disappointing season had an unhappy ending for the Mount Mercy men's  basketball team Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs lost to MidAmerica Nazarene, 98-76, in a Heart of America  Conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The visitors from Kansas led by 29 points at halftime, 59-30, and  opened a 34-point cushion in the second half.

Mount Mercy finished the season at 14-16 overall and 9-15 in the  conference. The Mustangs placed 10th in the league standings and did  not make the postseason tournament.

Mount Mercy baseball splits twinbill

JOLIET, Ill. - The Mount Mercy baseball team split a doubleheader with  St. Francis College Saturday in Illinois.

The Mustangs won the nightcap, 9-5, after dropping the opener, 8-2.

Nick Sueppel went 5-for-5 and drove in three runs in the 9-5 victory.  Cael Lambe, Jake Faur and Nick Traysman had two hits for the Mustangs.  Lambe scored three runs and Spencer Wiskus had two RBIs.

Tanner Lohaus (2-1) pitched six strong innings for the victory. He  allowed only four hits and was charged with three unearned runs.

KCC baseball team falls 14-0 in opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kirkwood baseball team had a rough time in  the season opener at Johnson County Friday.

Coach Todd Rima and the Eagles lost, 14-0, in a seven-inning game.

The Johnson County pitchers struck out 16 batters and allowed only one  hit. Johnson County scored its 14 runs on 16 hits.

Johnson County has a 12-1 record and is ranked No. 14 in NJCAA Division I.

Ruggles steers Mustangs past Clarke

Ben Ruggles rolled up 36 assists in just three games Thursday night as  Mount Mercy swept Clarke, 25-13, 25-15, 25-20, in a Heart of America  Conference men's volleyball match at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs raised their records to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the  league. Clarke fell to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the Heart.

Julian Armendano had 12 kills for Mount Mercy. Ben Steffen had seven  kills and Evan Gaskill had six.
