Shorthanded No. 4 Eagles knock off SCC

Jheda Kennedy moved into the starting lineup at point guard Wednesday  night and played 33 minutes to help No. 4 Kirkwood defeat  Southeastern, 67-46, in an ICCAC conference game at Johnson Hall.

Kennedy scored 13 points as the Eagles raised their records to 26-3 overall and 13-2 in the conference heading into the final game of the  regular season Saturday.

Starting point guard Ju Gaston and star center Paige Bradford missed  the game due to illness, leaving Coach Kim Muhl with only nine players  in uniform.

Kemara Watson, Kortney Drake and Natalie Tomaszewski matched Kennedy  with 13 points for the Eagles. Tomaszewski also had nine rebounds,  three blocks, two assists and a steal.

Mustangs miss Heart league tourney

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy men's basketball team lost to No. 7 William Penn, 101-77, Wednesday night and saw their faint hopes of reaching the Heart of America Conference tournament extinguished in Oskaloosa.

The Mustangs (14-15, 9-14) will finish 10th in the league standings and only the top eight teams will make the conference tournament.

Davarea Loggins popped in five 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Mount Mercy. Bailey Basala scored 15 points, Tyler Kelley 13, Dennis McKinney 11 and Streeter McIlravy 10 for the Mustangs. Starting point guard RoyShawn Webb did not play.

Josh Watkins scored 19 points for the Statesmen (26-3, 20-3), who have won the conference regular-season title.

Mount Mercy women fall by 30

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team lost to  18th-ranked William Penn, 71-41, Wednesday night in a Heart of America  Conference game in Oskaloosa.

Brianna Thomas scored 18 points for the Mustangs (5-23, 2-21).

Kate Ylitalo scored 14 points and former Kirkwood player Olivia Usher  had 12 points for William Penn (22-6, 18-5).

Mount Mercy spikes William Penn

OSKALOOSA - Ben Ruggles collected 43 assists Tuesday night as the Mount Mercy men's volleyball team defeated William Penn, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10, in a Heart of America Conference match in Oskaloosa.

The Mustangs raised their records to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference. William Penn fell to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Julian Armendano had 19 kills and Nikola Stoimenov had 11. Ben Steffen finished with 10 kills and four blocks.

No. 9 KCC softball enjoys Minnesota trip

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The ninth-ranked Kirkwood women's softball team won  all three of its games at the RCTC Dome Tournament in Rochester,  Minn., on Saturday.

The Eagles defeated Dakota College, 16-4; blanked the Clarke JV, 17-0;  and rallied to nip the Simpson JV, 7-6.

Sydney Albaugh, Haley DeWitte and Olivia Richards hit home runs  against Dakota College. London Jackson went 3-for-3 with two runs and  two RBI. Shelby Hulsebus, Jayme Finn, Albaugh, DeWitte and Richards  had two hits. DeWitte drove in four runs. Albaugh had three RBIs.  Finn, Jackson and Richards drove in two runs. Hulsebus had four stolen  bases.

Finn went 3-for-3 with two homers and six RBIs against Clarke. Haley  Jarrett also socked a home and was 3-for-3 with three runs and three  RBIs. Hulsebus, Autum Barthelman, Finn and Jarrett were all 3-for-3.  Hulsebus scored three times. Courtney Harris had two RBIs. Barthelman  scored two runs.
