Mount Mercy rally falls short

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - A furious rally by the Mount Mercy women's  basketball team fell a little short Saturday.

The Mustangs lost to Baker University, 59-55, in a Heart of America  Conference game after falling behind by 21 points.

Mount Mercy trailed 49-28 early in the fourth quarter, but they caught  fire for a 16-0 run and pulled within five points at 49-44.

The Mustangs later drew within three points at 56-53 on a 3-pointer by  Sandra Mia with 31 seconds left and within three points again at 58-55  on a basket by Grace Stalzer with 15 seconds remaining, but the rally  ended there.

Brianna Thomas scored 17 points for Mount Mercy (5-20, 2-18). Mia  finished with 15 points.

Mustangs fall short at Baker

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Mount Mercy men's basketball traveled to  Kansas on Saturday in search of an important victory on the road, but  a valiant effort fell short.

The Mustangs suffered a damaging loss to Baker, 85-80, in a Heart of  America Conference game after leading 34-33 at halftime.

Mount Mercy dropped into 10th place in the league standings. Only the  top eight teams in the conference will make the postseason tournament,  and the Mustangs are now two games out of eighth place with four games  left.

Armendano powers Mustangs in triangular

Julian Armendano collected 29 kills Saturday as the Mount Mercy men's  volleyball team swept both of its matches in a triangular meet at the  Hennessey Recreation Center.

Armendano collected 18 kills as the Mustangs took care of Judson,  25-17, 25-13, 25-22, in their first match. He then had 11 kills as the  Mustangs rolled by Morningside, 25-15, 25-18, 25-14, in their second  outing.

The twin-killings lifted Mount Mercy to 7-5 for the campaign.

Bobby Muller had seven kills for Mount Mercy in the victory over  Judson. Ben Ruggles dished out 28 assists. Armendano had 10 digs and  Ben Steffen blocked five shots.

Witzany tosses 3-hit gem for Mustangs

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Jayna Witzany pitched a three-hitter with 14  strikeouts Friday as the Mount Mercy softball team topped Northwest of  Washington, 1-0, in Arizona.

Witzany walked only three batters in the seven-inning contest as the  Mustangs (1-3) won their first game of the season.

Morgan Braughton drove in Payton Bruner with the only run of the game  in the bottom of the seventh inning for the victory.

Mount Mercy lost to Ottawa of Arizona, 3-0, in its other game Friday.

Mount Mercy baseball drops pair

The Mount Mercy baseball collected only three hits in a pair of  ballgames Friday and was blanked both times on its trip to Missouri.

The Mustangs lost to the College of the Ozarks, 6-0, and fell to Texas  A&M-Texarkana, 11-0, failing to score in either game.

Mount Mercy hitters went 3-for-42 in the two games.
